The Fortland Generalists

Position Overview

Part time contractors at Fortland are the heart of our daily Summer operations and support all manner of guest services, tours and events, and island upkeep. The best candidates for this will have many or all of the following types of experiences, abilities + qualifications:

  • Housekeeping

  • Organizational skills

  • Customer service skills

  • Ability to work independently + w/ a team

  • Waterfront experience

  • Boat operation + navigation

  • WFR/EMT Training

  • First Aid Certification

  • Catering + food service

  • Carpentry/handyman skills

  • Landscaping + gardening, including powered equipment

  • Hospitality

  • Event coordination

In addition, the candidate should be physically capable of being on their feet and moving for most work hours, of performing manual labor tasks, and lifting at least 50 lbs with some regularity.

Schedule:

This is a seasonal independent contractor position beginning in mid to late April/May and lasting into through August, possibly longer.

An average of *12-24  hours/week is expected (understanding that shoulder season weeks may be lighter and mid-season weeks may be heavier), to possibly include an overnight here and there as possible.


Compensation:

This is a 1099 contractor position and compensation ranges between $18-22/hour, depending on experience and aptitude. 

About Fortland

THE PLACE:

Fortland is a unique island Campground built within the grounds of historic Fort Scammel on House Island in Casco Bay, just a 10-minute boat ride from downtown Portland, ME. It is 16 total acres, which include seven beautifully-furnished camping sites (3 yurts and 4 tent cabins), as well composting toilet outhouses, an outdoor cooking area with grills and burners, a 40’ diameter event tent, 40,000 sq feet of historic civil war era architecture, and epic panoramic views of Portland harbor and the calendar islands. Fortland is open for camping and event rentals (weddings, retreats, reunions) from Memorial Day through mid October.
